Smartlook is closing. It has sold no new subscriptions since May 31, 2026, and on September 30, 2027 the platform is switched off and its data deleted. The right replacement depends on where you used it: on a website, in a mobile app, or both.

- **Microsoft Clarity**: best free replacement, for websites and mobile apps.
- **PostHog**: best for Smartlook’s events and funnels, plus web and mobile replay, in one product.
- **Fullstory**: best for replay and product analytics at company scale. Mobile is a paid add-on.
- **UXCam**: best if your Smartlook use was mostly in a mobile app.
- **Lucky Orange**: best for website recordings and heatmaps, plus live chat with visitors.
- **Behavly** (our product): best for heatmaps of your web app’s signed-in users that lead to an email written from what each person did.
- **Splunk Digital Experience Analytics**: Smartlook’s official successor, if you’re already a Splunk customer.

> Note: Dates, prices and features below were checked against each vendor’s own pages on October 17, 2026. Where a vendor doesn’t publish something, we say so.

#### What’s happening to Smartlook

Smartlook is being wound down as a standalone product. Its own FAQ sets out the dates:

| Date | What happens |
| --- | --- |
| May 31, 2026 | End of sale: no new Smartlook subscriptions. |
| August 31, 2026 | No more renewals or expansions for existing accounts. |
| August 31, 2027 | Every paid subscription has ended, and online support stops. |
| Until September 30, 2027 | The Free plan stays open, with its usual limits. |
| September 30, 2027 | The platform is decommissioned and all remaining customer data is deleted. |

Smartlook points customers to **Digital Experience Analytics**, part of Splunk Observability Cloud. Current subscriptions don’t move over on their own: you request access through your account manager or Smartlook support. Smartlook also says Splunk will not migrate any historical data.

> Warning: Export what you want to keep before your paid plan ends, and no later than August 31, 2027. Smartlook offers Reports and Exports and a REST API for this. After that date the Free plan’s limits apply, and on September 30, 2027 everything left is deleted. Whichever tool you move to, plan on starting its history fresh.

#### Microsoft Clarity

Clarity is Microsoft’s free behavior analytics tool. On websites it records sessions and draws heatmaps. Its mobile SDKs do the same in apps: native Android and iOS, React Native and Flutter, with Cordova and Ionic supported on Android only. In an app it shows session recordings, heatmaps, rage taps, dead taps, funnels and smart events.

- **Where it’s strong**: It costs nothing, with no traffic limit, no sampling and no cap on how many apps you add. For a Smartlook customer who mainly watched recordings and checked heatmaps, on the web or in an app, it’s the closest free replacement.
- **Where it falls short**: Recordings are kept for 30 days; favorites and a random sample are kept for up to 9 months. Heatmaps go back up to 9 months. On iOS the SDK doesn’t buffer on the device, so sessions recorded offline never upload. Notifications, navigation bars and the keyboard aren’t captured, and Microsoft notes that features vary between SDKs. Clarity reports what happened; it doesn’t contact your users.
- **Pricing**: Free, with no paid tier.

#### PostHog

PostHog is a product analytics platform with session replay, heatmaps, surveys, feature flags and error tracking. If your team relied on Smartlook’s events and funnels, this is the closest match: PostHog is built around events first. Mobile replay is generally available on Android, iOS, React Native and Flutter. Its Workflows product sends an email when a PostHog event fires.

- **Where it’s strong**: One product for analytics, replay and messaging, with a free allowance that resets every month. It covers 1 million events, 5,000 web recordings, 2,500 mobile recordings, 1,500 survey responses and 10,000 workflow emails.
- **Where it falls short**: It’s built for engineers. You define events and identify calls yourself, and every email is a template you write and wire into a workflow. Each product is billed on its own unit, so you need to estimate volumes. Past the free allowance, a mobile recording costs twice as much as a web one.
- **Pricing**: Free up to each monthly allowance, then pay as you go: $0.00005 per event, $0.005 per web recording, $0.01 per mobile recording and $0.003 per email, with unit prices falling at volume.

#### Fullstory

Fullstory combines session replay with product analytics for larger product and digital teams. Its free plan is unusually large, and it keeps data for a year.

- **Where it’s strong**: The free plan covers 30,000 sessions a month, 12 months of data and up to 10 users, with no credit card. For a web team that wants replay with a long history, that goes a long way.
- **Where it falls short**: Mobile capture is a paid add-on, so a Smartlook customer with an app can’t move to the free plan and keep app recordings. Paid prices aren’t published; every paid plan starts with a pricing request. It doesn’t email your users.
- **Pricing**: Free plan as above. Business, Advanced and Enterprise are priced on request.

#### UXCam

UXCam is product analytics for mobile apps and websites. It covers session replay, heatmaps, funnels, retention, user journeys and issue analytics. Tara, its AI analyst, flags changes and points to the sessions behind them, and an MCP server lets AI apps such as Claude and ChatGPT query your UXCam data.

- **Where it’s strong**: Mobile apps are part of the core product, not an add-on. That makes it a natural shortlist pick for a team whose Smartlook use was mostly inside an iOS or Android app.
- **Where it falls short**: There’s no published price and no free plan. Pricing is a custom quote based on your monthly sessions, and you can try it on a free trial first.
- **Pricing**: Custom quote; free trial with every feature.

#### Lucky Orange

Lucky Orange is a website tool: session recordings, dynamic heatmaps, conversion funnels, form analytics and a live view of who is on your site. It also lets you talk to visitors while they’re there, through live chat, on-site surveys and announcements.

- **Where it’s strong**: Every plan includes every feature. For a website team that used Smartlook’s recordings and heatmaps, the move is simple, and data storage can be extended to 90, 180 or 365 days.
- **Where it falls short**: There’s no free plan, only a 7-day trial. Data is stored for 60 days unless you pay for longer. Its pricing page talks about websites and doesn’t mention mobile apps, so check before planning to move an app over.
- **Pricing**: Build is $32/month billed yearly ($39 monthly) for 3,500 sessions. Grow is $72/month billed yearly for 10,000. Expand is $199/month billed yearly ($249 monthly) from 50,000. Extra websites are $5 each.

#### Behavly

Behavly is our product. It’s on this list because it has heatmaps, but it isn’t a like-for-like Smartlook replacement. It’s built for web products with signed-in users, and its heatmaps lead somewhere: to an email written from what each person did.

[Heatmaps](https://behavly.io/help-center/user-activity/heatmaps) paint four layers over your live site: clicks, rage clicks, movement and scroll. Above the table of people, tiles count clicks, rage clicks, dead clicks and scroll depth for the date range. One script tag recognizes who is signed in, with no identify call, so each identified user has a heatmap of their own across every browser they used.

_Each person in the table has their own heatmap layers, next to the map for everyone._

From there, a campaign writes each person an email from their own activity and sends it from your mailbox. For someone who struggled with an import, it might look like this:

After trouble with an import

> Subject: Importing your time logs
>
> Hi Marco,
>
> If the import on Time logs didn’t take your file, the usual cause is a date column in day-month order. One setting on the import screen switches it, and Larkspur then reads the file as it is.
>
> Your entries land under the right client projects, ready for this month’s reports.
>
> Try the import with the date setting: [link]
>
> Aisha

- **Where it’s strong**: Going from what one person did to what you say to them, in the same product. Heatmaps are on every plan, Free included, and the snippet doesn’t store IP addresses.
- **Where it falls short**: There are no session recordings, no funnel builder and no surveys. There’s no SDK for native iOS or Android apps: Behavly tracks websites and web apps through a script tag. It’s built around signed-in users; anonymous visitors are listed one row per browser, and only on paid plans. If replay was your main use of Smartlook, pair Behavly with Clarity or pick another tool here.
- **Pricing**: A free plan with no time limit: 100 tracked contacts, 30 days of behavior data, 50 AI-written emails a month and campaigns that run once. Paid plans start at $79/month for 2,500 tracked contacts, 90 days of behavior data and one always-on campaign.

#### Splunk Digital Experience Analytics, Smartlook’s successor

Smartlook names Digital Experience Analytics, part of Splunk Observability Cloud, as its successor. It says both web and mobile applications can be instrumented for it, and its FAQ gave March 2026 as the planned date for general availability.

- **Where it’s strong**: It’s the path Smartlook itself recommends, and it’s part of Splunk Observability Cloud, which suits teams already on Splunk.
- **Where it falls short**: Nothing carries over on its own. You request access through your account manager or Smartlook support, Splunk won’t migrate your history, and Smartlook’s pages don’t give a price.
- **Pricing**: Through your Splunk account manager.

#### What to check before you switch

- **Your mobile stack.** Clarity covers native Android and iOS, React Native and Flutter, with Cordova and Ionic on Android only. PostHog covers Android, iOS, React Native and Flutter. Fullstory charges for mobile as an add-on. Lucky Orange and Behavly are for websites.
- **Events and funnels.** If your team lived in Smartlook’s events and funnels rather than its recordings, PostHog is the closest fit. Clarity has funnels and smart events too.
- **Crash reports.** Smartlook showed what happened before an app crashed. If you used that, check how the replacement handles crashes in your app before you commit.
- **Retention.** 30 days of recordings (Clarity) won’t cover a quarter-on-quarter comparison. Fullstory’s free plan keeps 12 months; Lucky Orange sells longer storage.
- **The unit you pay for.** Sessions (Lucky Orange, UXCam), events and recordings (PostHog), or tracked people (Behavly).
- **Your export.** Do it first. After August 31, 2027 only the Free plan’s limits apply, and on September 30, 2027 the data is gone.

#### How to choose

- **You want recordings and heatmaps for free, on the web or in an app:** Microsoft Clarity.

- **You need replay and analytics at company scale, with a long history:** Fullstory.
- **Your product is mainly an iOS or Android app:** UXCam, Clarity or PostHog.
- **You run a website and want to chat with visitors while they’re there:** Lucky Orange.
- **You want to see what your web app’s signed-in users do, then send each a follow-up written from it:** Behavly, alone or next to Clarity for recordings.
- **You already run Splunk and want the official path:** Digital Experience Analytics.
