Intercom alternatives for outbound product email in 2026

Alternatives to Intercom’s outbound messaging, not its helpdesk, for SaaS lifecycle email: prices checked October 2026, channels, AI and who each one suits.

Updated October 10, 2026 · Competitor details checked October 10, 2026 on each vendor’s own site

If you use Intercom mostly for product email rather than support, the best alternatives are Customer.io, Loops, Userlist, Encharge, Bento and Behavly.

  • Customer.io: best for a full multi-channel platform with in-app and push.
  • Loops: best for simple, inexpensive email.
  • Userlist: best for B2B products that want email and in-app messages together.
  • Encharge or Bento: best for affordable automation with AI writing help.
  • Behavly: best for follow-ups written for one person from what they did in your product.

Product email here means onboarding, nudges and re-engagement. This page compares Intercom’s outbound messaging only, not its helpdesk or the Fin AI Agent.

Intercom’s in-product messaging is strong. Tours, checklists, banners and posts sit next to the support inbox, on one customer record that support and outbound share.

On the outbound side, people look for an alternative for three reasons. Costs stack up, with seats, an add-on and a charge for every bulk email. Email is often the channel they actually use, so they pay for a suite to send one kind of message.

And they want help writing. Intercom’s AI pricing centers on support, and its Outbound page describes no AI writer for outbound messages.

How Intercom prices outbound messaging

Intercom charges for outbound in three layers, which is why the bill is hard to predict from the pricing page alone.

Seats
Essential $29 per seat/month billed yearly ($39 billed monthly), Advanced $85 ($99), Expert $132 ($139). You need at least one Full seat, and only Full seats can send messages or fully use outbound content.
Proactive Support Plus add-on
From $99/month per workspace. It includes 500 messages across product tours, surveys, in-app messages, mobile push and carousels. Extra messages are charged per unit. It also adds Posts, Checklists and the Series campaign builder.
Usage
Email campaigns are charged per bulk email sent, on tiers from $0.045 per email for the first 100 down to $0.00025 above 2 million. Intercom’s own example is $39.00 for 3,000 emails. SMS is charged per message and varies by region, WhatsApp per conversation. Chats, banners, tooltips, inbound WhatsApp and one-to-one inbox emails are free.

So the smallest outbound setup is one Essential seat, plus Proactive Support Plus, plus per-email charges. Take Intercom’s own example of 3,000 campaign emails a month. That team starts at about $167/month ($29 seat billed yearly, $99 add-on, $39 in email charges), before extra seats, SMS or WhatsApp.

Intercom offers a 14-day free trial with no card, and its Early Stage program takes up to 93% off.

Behavly: best for follow-ups written from what each user did

We make Behavly, so read this entry with that in mind. It’s an AI agent that writes each follow-up email for one person, from what they did in your product, and sends it from your own mailbox.

Intercom can reach people inside your product with tours, banners and in-app messages. Behavly has none of those. It reaches people by email, from a real mailbox, so each message reads like a note from a colleague.

An Intercom message is written once for its audience. Behavly writes a different email for each person, from what one script tag on your signed-in pages recorded about them. The onboarding note mentions the step they stopped on; the re-engagement email, the project they left.

Replies come back the same way. They’re pulled from your mailbox into Behavly’s inbox, with the sender’s history on your site attached, so you can see what they did before you answer. Behavly can also draft your answer from the thread and that history, and the draft waits for you to edit and send.

For ongoing follow-up, a Behavly Agent runs an always-on path. People join as they qualify, and the path waits or branches on what each one does next, such as opening an email, logging in or replying.

Where it’s strong
Every email is written from one person’s activity, in any of 80 languages. Tracking, heatmaps painted on your live site, and email sit in one tool. Paths can be described in words, A/B tested and measured against a goal. Priced on tracked contacts, with no per-email charges. You approve the emails before they go out. The free plan has no time limit.
Where it falls short
Email only: no in-app messages, product tours, checklists, chat widget, SMS, push or WhatsApp. That’s a real gap if in-product messaging is why you chose Intercom. It isn’t a helpdesk, and it isn’t built for newsletters or transactional email. Sending through your own mailbox over IMAP/SMTP suits personal, one-to-one volume, not bulk sends to a large list. Few integrations: no native Stripe, Segment, HubSpot or Zapier connection, though there’s a REST API and an MCP server. Seats are limited by plan (1, 3, 10 or unlimited).
Pricing
Free (100 tracked contacts, 50 AI-written emails a month). Starter $79/month (2,500 tracked contacts, 2,000 AI emails, one Agent). Growth $249/month (10,000 tracked contacts, 8,000 AI emails, five Agents). Scale $699/month (40,000 tracked contacts), sold through sales.

Customer.io: best for the widest outbound channel set

Of the tools here, Customer.io comes closest to the breadth of Intercom’s outbound side. Email, SMS, push, in-app messages, WhatsApp and LINE are all on its entry plan, and seats are unlimited. Essentials includes 1M emails a month, with extra emails at $0.12 per 1,000.

Journeys are built in a visual workflow builder with True/False, Multi-Split and Random Cohort branches. Data comes in through SDKs, an API, webhooks or Segment.

Where it’s strong
Broad native channels on the entry plan. Mature journey logic, with A/B and multivariate testing on every plan. Transactional and marketing email in one place. Unlimited seats, so the whole team can work on messages without a per-seat cost.
Where it falls short
A $100/month floor, and billing counts every identified profile and object, active or not. Warehouse, Salesforce and HubSpot integrations need Premium, from $1,000/month billed yearly. Your team designs the journeys and writes the copy; the AI Agent that helps is in beta. If tours and checklists drive your onboarding, compare its in-app messages with Intercom’s before you switch.
Pricing
Essentials from $100/month (5,000 profiles, 1M emails a month) and $145/month at 10,000. Premium from $1,000/month billed yearly. A 14-day trial; no free plan.

Loops: best for simple, inexpensive email

Loops is an email tool for SaaS that keeps product, marketing and transactional email in one place. If you only send email from Intercom, it replaces seat, add-on and per-email charges with one price based on contacts.

Its workflows are built from emails, timers, audience filters, branches and experiments. One can start when a contact is added, updated or joins a list. An event from the API, or from an integration such as Segment, RudderStack or PostHog, can start one too.

Where it’s strong
Pricing on subscribed contacts only, unlimited sends on paid plans and no seat fees. A generous free tier. Transactional email included on paid plans. Integrations with Stripe, Segment, Zapier, Make, Supabase, Clerk, PostHog and HubSpot. An API, a CLI and an MCP server for developers and AI agents.
Where it falls short
Email only, so you lose Intercom’s in-app messages, tours and banners. No built-in AI writer is documented; copy comes from your team or an external agent. Every subscribed contact counts toward the price, active or not.
Pricing
Free for your 1,000 newest contacts, up to 4,000 sends in any rolling 30 days, with a “Powered by Loops” footer. Paid from $49/month (5,000 contacts), $99/month (10,000) and $199/month (25,000).

Userlist: best for B2B email plus in-app messages

Userlist is built for B2B SaaS. It keeps two of Intercom’s outbound pieces, email and in-app messages, in one visual workflow builder, with transactional email included. It models users and companies with many-to-many relationships, so a campaign can be triggered by what a company does.

Userlist also lists an Intercom integration, so you can keep Intercom for support and move lifecycle messaging to Userlist.

Where it’s strong
The users-plus-companies data model. Email and in-app messages together, with transactional email from Basic. A 60-minute roadmapping session for new accounts. Integrations with Segment, RudderStack, Stripe, HubSpot, Zapier, Intercom and Slack.
Where it falls short
A $149/month entry, and every user counts, active or not, using the high-water mark of the previous 30 days. Basic caps custom events at 20, and A/B split testing and conversion goals need Professional at $349/month. No SMS or push. No AI writer is described.
Pricing
Basic $149/month (up to 10,000 users, 5 seats), then $10/month per extra 1,000 users. Professional $349/month (10,000 users, 10 seats). 20% off billed yearly. A 14-day trial with card details upfront.

Encharge: best for billing-driven email with AI writing help

Encharge is lifecycle email for SaaS that connects directly to billing systems: Stripe, Chargebee, Chargify, Paddle and Recurly. Zapier, webhooks, Typeform, Slack and Calendly connect too. Flows are built from triggers, filters and actions, with segmentation on website and email behavior and lead scoring.

It also has AI writing help. Magic Writer generates subject lines, outlines or whole emails, and AI Autocomplete rewrites or expands a selection. Encharge can notify your team by email or Slack as well.

Where it’s strong
Deep SaaS billing integrations without engineering work. A/B tests on a single email, a sequence or a whole flow. AI writing help in the editor. Unlimited seats and flows.
Where it falls short
Product-event tracking (the Ingest API and event-based segments), Segment, HubSpot, Salesforce and transactional email are Premium only. Email only, with no in-app messaging. Monthly sends are capped at 10 times your subscribers on Growth and 12 times on Premium, with overages beyond that.
Pricing
Growth from $99/month (2,000 subscribers), or $79/month billed yearly. Premium from $159/month, or $129/month billed yearly. A 14-day free trial.

Bento: best for low-cost automation, with chat as an option

Bento is email automation for indie and small SaaS and ecommerce teams. It has a JavaScript SDK (bento.identify, bento.track) and an Events API that triggers flows. Flows branch on tags, fields, segments or Liquid expressions.

Its AI assistant, Tanuki, is included. It drafts whole flows, writes and edits email copy and builds segments, either waiting for your approval or applying changes straight away. If you also want to replace Intercom’s chat, the $30/month Chat add-on brings live chat and a shared inbox, plus push, SMS and WhatsApp.

Where it’s strong
A low entry price, charged on active users (subscribed, or with an event in the last 30 days). Unlimited marketing email, subject to fair use, and no seat fees. Tanuki AI included with unlimited use. Very cheap transactional email.
Where it falls short
Channels beyond email need the Chat add-on. Segment works through a destination function rather than a native catalog app. A/B testing is documented for broadcasts only.
Pricing
$29/month for up to 5,000 active users, then $0.01 per active user up to 50,000, which comes to $79/month at 10,000. Transactional email: the first 100 a month free, then $5/month up to 12,500. Chat add-on $30/month. A 30-day free trial.

You don’t have to leave Intercom to use one of these. One-to-one inbox emails stay free on Intercom, so one workable split is support on Intercom and lifecycle email elsewhere. Just decide which tool owns each message so nobody gets the same nudge twice. For what that lifecycle email should say, start with the SaaS onboarding email sequence.

Questions

What is the best alternative to Intercom for product email?
For the widest set of outbound channels, including in-app and push, Customer.io. For email only at a low price, Loops. For B2B email plus in-app messages, Userlist. You need at least one Full seat (Essential is $29/month billed yearly) and the Proactive Support Plus add-on (from $99/month). Bulk email is charged per email, which Intercom illustrates as $39.00 for 3,000 emails. That’s about $167/month for a small team sending 3,000 campaign emails, before SMS, WhatsApp or extra seats.

Loops is free for your 1,000 newest contacts, with up to 4,000 sends in any 30 days. Behavly is free for up to 100 tracked contacts, with no time limit. Intercom has a 14-day free trial and an Early Stage program with up to 93% off.
Can I keep Intercom for support and use another tool for email?
Yes. Userlist lists an Intercom integration, and Behavly runs on its own snippet beside Intercom, with replies coming back to the mailbox you connect. Intercom’s one-to-one inbox emails stay free either way.
Does Intercom have AI for writing outbound emails?
Intercom’s AI pricing centers on support: the Fin AI Agent at $0.99 per outcome and Copilot at $29 per agent/month billed yearly. Its Outbound page describes no AI writer for outbound messages. Encharge, Bento and Behavly include AI writing, and Behavly writes each email for one person from their activity.
